May 15, 2024 Margaret Lewis - One Block Wonder May 16, 2024 Workshop: Kathy Willmann - One Block Wonder Kathy has been sewing for as long as she can remember, taught by her aunt who was a master seamstress. She enjoys hand and machine piecing, hand quilting, crocheting, and interpreting patterns. With a background in accounting, her math skills are invaluable when determining yardage for quilts, or adjusting pattern sizes. Kathy is employed at Uptown Blanco Textile where she sews many of the store's display quilts, is an instructor for workshops, and is the longarm quilter.
June 19, 2024 Jean Grimes - Boro, Kantha, Kawandi Oh My! Different countries call it different names, but it's what we called Big Stitch a few years ago. Hand stitching can add texture and color and meld different fabrics together. She will discuss how the style of hand stitching differs in different countries and how you can enhance your quilt with hand stitching and even a bit of embroidery.
Jean's background in interior design, painting and weaving, made playing with fabric pattern and color and sewing it together to form a quilt a natural progression. When she first started quilting she felt there were so many quilts to make with squares and triangles there was no need to add anything else. Just sew together fabrics of her choices of color and pattern to make designs. But she always wanted to change the pattern. Now she enjoys being an art quilter and playing with saturated color with paint or dye, texture, movement and color gradation as well as lots of different techniques to produce an artful piece that is pleasing to view on the wall.
June 20, 2024 Workshop: Jean Grimes - Boro In the morning, we will begin a boro (sashiko) stitch project that you may make into a pillow or bag later. We will layer fabrics on a backing and baste them together. Then the stitching begins. We will look at different sizes and colors of threads, fabrics that lend themselves to hand stitch, needles, and other tools to make your piece your own. In the afternoon we will continue with our stitching and learn about Boro, Sashiko, Kawandi, and Kantha and how they differ. Jean will have examples and we will talk about how to use this stitch in your quilt, whether traditional, or art quilt. A kit will be provided (there is a fee). Please bring your scissors and your favorite thimble if you use one.
